TOKAY WINERY,
GLEN ELLEN - 1874

Kohler & Frohling sourced some of its earliest grapes from the Sonoma valley with Glen Ellen's Tokay Vineyard. In 1874 Charles Kohler bought that vineyard replacing damaged vines with varieties grafted on sturdier native rootstock. With a healthy vineyard in place, he expanded the property to about 800 acres, planting an additional 350 acres with vines and building a new, larger winery and extensive support buildings. Kohler ultimately developed the Glen Ellen vineyard into one of California's largest and most successful wineries. Author Jack London's estate was built on this site years later - now

Jack London State Historical Park.

It is fitting that the ruins of the winery, once owned by winemakers who were musicians and patrons of the arts, now serves as a performance venue in the summer months. Charles Kohler and John Frohling would certainly approve!
